So far people are diagnosed with diabetes are many who avoid eating rice but instead eat porridge or rice cake. This behavior is wrong because the porridge and rice cake was more rapid increase in blood sugar than rice.

"Porridge and rice cake was even more rapid increase in blood sugar than rice. Because the more easily processed food digestion is the process of forming blood sugar will be more quickly," said Dr. Benny Kurniawan in gathering Media Alert No. 140 on Signboard Seafood Restaurant, Pacific Place, Jakarta , on Thursday (23/12/2010).

According to Dr Benny, the more intact form of food then the graph will increase blood sugar more slowly. While foods that are not intact or has been treated like porridge and rice cake even more quickly raise blood sugar. Foods that long proceed(complex carbohydrates) that include whole grains, brown rice, cassava, sweet potatoes, corn.

Dr Benny also said there was a false paradigm that are circulating in the community, one that says that people with diabetes should not eat rice.

"Actually, people with diabetes can still eat rice, because it's not not eat rice, but the total calories and total carbohydrates he eats," said Dr. Benny who is a doctor graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, UI.

People who are already diagnosed with diabetes will usually be referred to a doctor to a nutritionist, so that patients can count the number of calories she consumed.

"The patient must be able to be a doctor himself. Patients should also be smart to count calories that he input into the body. How easy is by carbohydrate counting," said Dr. Benny.

Dr Benny explains, carbohydrate counting is a way to simplify the calculation of calories is considered complicated. In essence, the most important for diabetics who is counting calories derived from carbohydrates.

"Blood sugar up and down that's the main influenced by the carbohydrates, so for easy counting calories, simply by counting calories derived from carbohydrates. So, eating rice is actually fine, as long as he is smart to calculate how many calories of carbohydrates from rice," said Dr Benny.

In addition to the paradigm that should not be eating rice, Dr Benny also mentioned other paradigms are also widely circulated in the community, the chubby child who looks cute and adorable.

"Yes it looks funny, but children who are obese since childhood will potentially great experience diabetes at an early age. In Jakarta and major cities people have early diabetes is possible," said Dr. Benny.

Instant-paced lifestyle, often eat fast food, rarely moves are important factors that could make someone a diabetic, not least the people who are still young.

"In the past trend of people affected by diabetes over the age of 40 years, but now under the age of 35 or even at the age of two heads can also get diabetes. The reason for the child allowed to overweight or even obese since childhood, finally fitting teenager he could get pre-diabetes and if not addressed could get diabetes for life, "concludes Dr. Benny.
